Achurch

Election of Parish Councillors for Thorpe Achurch on Thursday 3 May 2007 (PDF)

Thorpe Achurch is located approximately 3.5 miles north east of Thrapston and shares a Parish with Thorpe Waterville. Achurch is recorded in the Domesday Book as 'Asechirce' and consists of a row of identical estate cottages dating from 1830-1840.
The well head and trough opposite the cottages was constructed in the late 19th Century for the fourth baron Lilford in memory of his son, Thomas Atherton Powys.
The present church was built in 1218 by Sir Asceline de Waterville, as a thanks offering for the safe return from a crusade. The porch was added in 1867 but otherwise the church looks much as it must have done originally.
This Church has been the Parish Church for both Achurch and Lilford since 1778 when Lilford Church, having fallen into decay, was demolished, and memorials removed to Achurch. There was an unsuccessful attempt to rebuild Lilford Church in the Lynches and the remains can still be seen there.
At the time of this merger, an extra acre of land was added to the north side of the Church for extra burials. For this reason, all graves predating 1778 are on the south side of the Church. All graves on the south side face west and all graves on the north face east.
If you follow the footpath (The Nene Way) behind the church and into the meadows you will be rewarded with excellent views of the valley.
In 1991 the population was 128 with 53 houses and the estimate for mid 1995 was 138 and 54.
The village is visited by a mobile library.
